CHIEF JOHN J. McGOWAN III MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Supporting the education and training of future police officers

 

The Chief John J. McGowan III Memorial Scholarship Foundation is accepting applications for its annual scholarship program. The Foundation awards $2,500 scholarships to eligible cadets completing the Municipal Police Officer Education and Training Program (Act 120) at the Montgomery County Police Academy.

 

APPLICATION DEADLINE: Please submit your application two weeks before graduation.

 

APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must:

• Be currently enrolled as a cadet in the Montgomery County Police Academy.
• Be personally responsible for the cost of attending the academy and receive no tuition reimbursement from an employer or municipality.
• Be expected to graduate with their current academy class.
• Not have previously received a Chief John J. McGowan III Memorial Scholarship.

Scholarship funds will be awarded only to recipients who successfully graduate with their academy class.

 

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

Before beginning the application, please have the following ready:

• Your contact and educational information
• Responses to short-answer questions 
• One scholarship essay
• A current résumé in PDF format
• Two letters of recommendation

Recommendations from law-enforcement professionals are encouraged but not required. Recommendation letters may be uploaded with the application or submitted separately by the recommenders according to the instructions provided in the application.

The application should take approximately 30–45 minutes to complete. Because documents must be uploaded, applicants will need to sign in to a Google account. We recommend drafting longer responses in a separate document before beginning.

All application materials, including recommendation letters submitted separately, must be received two weeks prior to graduation. Incomplete or late applications may not be considered.
